Kicking Off Our Financial Freedom Party Facilitator Training!

Thanks to the generous support of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and the Lincoln and Therese Filene Foundation, we kicked off our “Financial Freedom Party” facilitator training! In case you missed it, CEOC is launching a financial capabilities project, inspired by the “HIV Safety Net Party” model that we had previously used years ago in our reproductive health education program. In this model, we trained women to conduct HIV prevention workshops in homes and community spaces with friends and family to provide a community-based approach to education that successfully combatted stereotypes and taboos.

We are adapting this model to offer financial education in a fun, peer-led “party” format for our Cambridge community members. These financial education parties will blend the social and educational. Party hosts will receive a stipend to cover the cost of providing culturally appropriate refreshments, and attendees will each receive their own financial capability toolkit. Sessions will be engaging, incorporating games and prizes to facilitate learning through interactive activities. Each party will be hosted by a member of the community, who will invite friends and family to attend. The content of the party will be delivered by a trained facilitator and a CEOC staff member.

Yesterday, we began training our facilitators! Our 6 facilitators speak Spanish, Amharic, Bangla, Haitian Creole, and Arabic and are residents of Cambridge who are engrained to their communities. They each come with diverse backgrounds in terms of life experience, culture, and work experience. By the end of the month, facilitators will be ready to facilitate their first party!

Stay tuned for updates about this exciting project.
