Cambridge Economic Opportunity Committee (CEOC) is delighted to announce that we have been selected as one of 71 recipients of a Community Fund Grant from the Cambridge Community Foundation this week.
The $25,000 grant will help CEOC address food access and food insecurity issues in Cambridge through our food pantries in Central Square and North Cambridge, and also by offering grocery store gift cards. More than 6,000 Cambridge families receive SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance) benefits, and throughout the pandemic, they also received monthly emergency allotments. This emergency SNAP assistance ended in March, creating a cliff effect of about $151 per month that has left many families struggling to afford groceries. Thanks to the generosity of the Cambridge Community Foundation and its supporters, CEOC can ensure that pantry patrons not only have sufficient food but are also offered a wider variety of foods, especially herbs, spices, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and culturally relevant items that are typically difficult to find at food pantries.
Cambridge Economic Opportunity Committee has been fighting poverty in Cambridge since 1965. Our mission is to empower people and mobilize resources to fight poverty’s causes and impacts through education and organizing. We envision an inclusive and diverse Cambridge without poverty where everyone has affordable housing, quality health care and education, food security and economic stability.
