When Crisis Hit, Cambridge Stepped Forward

Read our op-ed in the Cambridge day on our gratitude for our community's response to the government shutdown:

In a year defined by uncertainty, one moment stands out in its gravity: the federal government shutdown that halted Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for the first time in history. For over 10,000 Cambridge residents who rely on SNAP to put food on the table, this crisis was immediate and devastating. And yet, what we will remember most is not the fear of that moment, but the extraordinary way our community rose to meet it.

We were stunned — and deeply moved — by the outpouring of support from all corners of the city. Neighbors organized food drives overnight. Families and faith communities sent monetary donations. Local groups collected gift cards so parents could shop for essentials with dignity. Companies set up matching donation campaigns for their employees. At a time when many felt powerless, Cambridge took action.

Because of the rapid response and investment from the City of Cambridge and the Cambridge Community Foundation, CEOC purchased 4,500 grocery store gift cards within just a couple weeks. These cards have gone directly into the hands of older adults, residents with disabilities, and parents who suddenly found themselves without the resources they depend on. The speed and scale of this effort was unlike anything we’ve experienced — and it was only possible because our community refused to let its most vulnerable neighbors face this crisis alone.

Our dedicated team of staff has been mobilizing across the city to distribute gift cards and get the word out about SNAP. We’ve partnered with the Cambridge Housing Authority, HRI, Just A Start, Cambridge Council on Aging, Somerville/Cambridge Elder Services, and the Cambridge Public Schools to meet people where they are. In just the last month, we have hosted 17 outreach events — from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, to senior housing developments, to Fresh Pond Apartments, to the Center for Families, and more. At every stop, we’ve heard stories of worry, resilience, and gratitude.

Part of the City’s and Cambridge Community Foundation’s investment also went to the Cambridge Food Pantry Network. Our food pantry, along all the pantries in the Network, has seen a significant surge in visitors in recent weeks, even since November SNAP benefits went out and the shutdown had ended. The need is real and it is still growing. But our staff and volunteers — who have worked with compassion, stamina, and a fierce commitment to equity — have met this moment with remarkable determination.

There is no question that the shutdown tested us. But what it revealed is the strength of Cambridge: a city where people take care of one another, where crisis sparks collective action, and where no one is left behind if the community has anything to say about it.

The fight is not over. New threats from Washington seem to come down every week, with many immigrants losing access to SNAP benefits and health insurance premiums skyrocketing. We will continue to innovate and meet this moment, and know that our Cambridge community will continue to step up too.

To everyone who lent a hand, donated a dollar, organized a drive, or simply asked, “How can I help?” — thank you. You reminded us that while crises may be unprecedented, so too is the generosity of Cambridge. We are honored to do this work alongside you.
